Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases and surgery of the eyes and visual tracts,including the eye,optic nerve,retina vitreous body,lens,iris,cornea,eyelids,and,areas surrounding the eye such as:the lacrimal system and eyelids,the eye doctor and surgeon is concerned with treating the eyes and the diseases and refractive errors that afflict them. this may include treating eye diseases such as conjunctivitis or infections,or surgeries to correct eyesight,implant lenses,treat cataracts.

Ophthalmology doctors are trained to provide:

• a wide range of eye care, from fitting glasses and contact lenses to diagnosing eye diseases and performing eye surgeries.
• Many ophthalmologists also perform scientific research on the causes of, and cures for, vision problems and eye diseases.
• they must spend at least three years as a resident in a hospital setting, receiving training in all aspects of eye care.
• the full spectrum of eye care, including the prescription of glasses and contact lenses, medical treatment and complex microsurgery.
